Dog Daze Virtual Class

Welcome to Dog Daze! Follow along as Kimberly Rado walks you through the steps to make her quilt. The pattern can be purchased here, and we have three kits available. The pastel baby quilt kits can be purchased here; the orange and brown quilt, shown at the beginning and end of the video, here; and we have a blue and brown colorway here.

Supplies:

  • Dog Daze Pattern

  • Fabrics of your choice

  • Freezer paper

  • Pen or pencil

  • Ruler, rotary cutter, and cutting mat

Watch the video above for step-by-step directions. Here is a written version of those directions.

  1. Put the dog template onto a light box or window, and trace onto freezer paper using a pen or pencil. You can trace it exactly as it appears on the template, with one piece flush against its neighbor.

    • Trace everything in this way except the eyes, ears, and nose — those need to be traced separately

    • Repeat with the star template.

  2. Label each piece and cut out.

  3. Iron each template piece to the right side of your fabrics.

  4. Starting with the ear pieces, cut out each piece of fabric, remembering to add 1/4” around each piece.

  5. Sew ears right sides together. Turn, iron, and topstitch.

  6. Make the dog blocks. Sew together the seams in the order written on the pattern. Iron, pressing the seams to the darker fabric.

    • Sew the top background piece last, catching the ears’ top seams within this seam.

  7. Applique the eyes and noses onto each block.

  8. Sew blocks together, again pressing seams to the darker fabric.

  9. Repeat this process with the stars. Cut out, adding 1’4” to each piece, and sew following the pattern. Iron and press seams to the darker fabric.

  10. Measure borders through the middle of the quilt, rather than just sewing a long strip the bottom.

    • Measuring through the middle and “making it fit” keeps the quilt from growing at the top and bottom, which keeps it nice and square.

  11. Sew inner borders on.

  12. Sew star blocks to the outer borders and sew on.

  13. Quilt, bind, and enjoy!
